note: this is about the Valley Christian schools in Bellflower & Cerritos, CA
First of all, this is NOT an
official Valley Christian website, nor am I an official representative nor
sponsor et al. My interest in Valley Christian derives from the fact that my
grandfather, the late Rev. Gareth Kok, was the founder of the Valley Christian
Schools, and in 1984 when my family moved from Grand Rapids (MI) to Bellflower
(CA) I almost attended Valley Christian high as a senior. The key
word is "almost" because at the last moment I decided to return to
Michigan on my own and live with a friend (and later a relative) to finish out
high school where I began and where my friends were. This is NOT to say I
didn't make any friends during the summer of '84 when I actually practiced with
the Valley Christian team for a few weeks but as you can imagine it's not the
same. There were a few great guys at Valley who attempted to make
me feel at home during the brief time I was there (especially Kirk Templeman
& family, who also attended the same church, Bethany CRC, God bless them)
but my heart still remained back in west Michigan where I grew up, and so I
finished high school at Grand Rapids Christian High (Go Eagles!) .
Nonetheless, over time, after finishing high school & college, and doing a bit of this and that around the USA and in other parts of the world, including education & Christian missions, I eventually started spending more time back around southern California and started following a little more of what was happening around Valley Christian, especially in terms of sports. I also have continued to learn more about my grandfather's contribution(s) as the founder of Valley Christian schools around 1936 when he came to Bellflower as a Christian Reformed Church pastor. I might add that Valley Christian began primarily as a Dutch Christian school.
